Unusual Suspension Noises, and What Might Cause Them

If you’re driving down the street and you hear some strange suspension noises coming from your car, light truck or SUV, you might wonder what might be causing the noise? Unusual suspension noises in a vehicle could be caused by various issues. Here are some common culprits:

1. Worn-out or damaged shock absorbers/struts:

These are essential for providing a smooth ride and stabilizing the vehicle. When they’re worn or damaged, they can cause clunking, rattling, or banging noises.

2. Worn ball joints or bushings:

Ball joints and bushings help connect various suspension components. If they’re worn, they can cause clunking or squeaking sounds, especially when turning or going over bumps.

3. Faulty or worn-out suspension mounts:

Mounts that hold suspension components in place can wear out over time, leading to knocking or banging noises.

4. Loose or damaged sway bar links:

Sway bar links help stabilize the vehicle during turns. If they’re loose or damaged, they can produce clunking or rattling sounds, especially when going over bumps or making turns.

5. Broken or worn-out springs:

Springs support the vehicle’s weight and absorb shocks. If they’re broken or worn, they can cause a variety of noises, including clunking or creaking.

6. Misaligned or worn tires:

Improperly aligned or worn tires can create unusual noises, especially when driving at certain speeds or turning.

7. Excessive wear on suspension components:

Normal wear and tear over time can cause various suspension parts to degrade, leading to noise issues.

Address Issues Promptly

It’s crucial to address suspension noises promptly because they can indicate safety issues or potentially worsen over time. If you notice unusual sounds coming from your vehicle’s suspension, it’s best to have a professional mechanic inspect it to diagnose and fix the problem.
