STOP!!!
It’s moments like this where we hope we can hit the brakes. Your vehicle’s braking system is the most important safety system that you have, and if you’re concerned that it’s not operating at peak performance, you should act right away. There are a number of warning signals to let you know if you need a brake system inspection or repair, none of which can be taken lightly. Here are a few warning signs to watch for:
Screeching or Scrubbing
If you hear a screeching or scrubbing noise when applying the brake pedal, it’s likely because your brake pads have worn down to the wear indicator. This indicator lets you know your brakes don’t have much longer until they’re worn completely. You should plan on getting new brake pads very soon. Do you hear screeching or scrubbing coming from the wheel area when the vehicle is in motion? This could mean a number of things for your brakes. The number one reason would be the caliber is stuck, and your brakes are constantly being applied and worn down. You’ll need to get this checked immediately to keep your brakes and your car in good condition.
Pulsing
Do you feel a pulsation in your steering wheel or brake pedal when applying your brakes? If so, your vehicle’s rotors could be warped or the suspension could be worn. Luckily, we service these areas of your vehicles and can get you riding smooth again in no time.
Stopping Distance
If you’ve been experiencing longer than normal stopping distances, your vehicle’s brake pads are likely getting worn. You could also have low hydraulic pressure because you don’t have enough fluid for the brakes to operate properly. This could become very dangerous very quickly. If this is the case for you, put “get my brakes fixed” at the top of your checklist.
Weak or Hard Brake Pedal
Is your brake pedal is hard to press down or even much easier than normal? This could be a sign that your brakes need replacing. There could be a problem with the power assist mechanism or in the hydraulic system.
Tension
If your parking brake has little or no tension it’s likely because your rear brakes are out of adjustment or worn out. Mis-adjustment usually happens when the emergency brake is not used often. It also occurs if the car is parked on an incline. The last thing you want is for it to go rolling back down the hill though. So, be sure to bring it by Postle’s for a brake system inspection.
Pumping
If you’re having to pump the brake pedal to create firm pressure on the pedal, you need a brake system inspection. When the brake fluid is too low, it can cause air pockets to form in the brake system. This causes you to pump the brakes in order to push out these air pockets to find a solid spot that will stop the vehicle. You don’t want to let this go on long before making your way to get this problem fixed.
No Brakes
Obviously, if your brakes aren’t working at all, you need new ones, hopefully before needing a whole new car…
We want you to be safe. Keeping your vehicle’s braking system well maintained and in optimum working condition is one of the most important things you can do as a vehicle owner. If you have any concerns about how your vehicle’s braking system is operating, feel free to bring in your car, truck or SUV to Postle’s for a FREE complete brake system inspection. We will be happy to help!
