Vacation time is coming soon, and we want you (and your vehicle) to be ready. Below is a checklist of things to check on your vehicle before hitting the road (in no particular order).
Fluid levels
Radiator fluid level needs to be topped off according to your vehicle’s requirements. If you check your radiator fluid level and the reservoir is empty, fill it up and check it again in a few days. If it is empty again, you should have a pressure check done on your radiator to make sure you have no leaks before hitting the road.
Washer fluid level should be topped off before hitting the road. Driving on the highway or near the beach is synonymous with making contact with large insects that like to visit your windshield. Having the ability to wash your windshield on the fly (pun intended) can make driving safer for you.
Brake fluid levels should be topped off to make sure your braking system maintains the correct pressure when applying your brake pedal.
Change your oil. If you are nearing the time to have your vehicle’s oil changed, go ahead and do it. A trip to the Gulf Coast might only be 600 miles or so round trip, however, you’ll drive another few hundred miles sight-seeing, going out to eat and shopping, etc. Better to be safe than sorry, and have the peace of mind of wondering if you should have changed your oil before you left home.
Transmission fluid levels should be topped off.
Routine safety checks
Before hitting the road on vacation, take your vehicle to Postle Tire Barn and have your tires, brakes, front end and suspension parts checked out. Traveling a long distance on so-so tires can cause you un-due worry when you’re supposed to be having fun.
Excessive heat can cause your braking system problems, so make sure your braking system is in good shape before hitting the road.
If your vehicle is showing irregular tire wear, having a front end or four wheel alignment performed can stop the irregular wear and get you more miles from your tires.
Make sure your air pressure is correct. A few pounds off from either of your front tires can cause your vehicle to pull to one side. Low air pressure can also cause your gas milage to suffer. Under-inflated tires makes your engine work harder to propel your vehicle therefore causing your gas milage to suffer.
